The Pathfinders who attended our bike camp have already completed some of the requirements for both the Cycling and Mountain Biking honours. However, there are some additional requirements for those who would like to complete these honours. This is optional and up to each Pathfinder.
The biggest outstanding requirement for the Cycling honour is for Pathfinders to complete an 80km bike ride. To earn the Mountain Biking honour, the Cycling honour is a prerequisite, plus Pathfinders need to complete an additional mountain biking session. So, we have scheduled additional cycling events as follows.
Sunday 12th August – Wylde Mountain Bike Trail
Take Elizabeth drive exit from M7. Travel 2km west and take the second left turn into Sydney International Shooting Centre. Park in the first carpark on your left. Arrive at 8:00 for 8:15 start, we expect to finish at 11:30 (includes some book work). Please pack a high protein snack (muesli bar or two, dried fruit) and full water bottle, spare tube and puncture kit.
Saturday 1st September – M7 cycleway, 20km ride
Meet at 3:00pm at Fairmont Circuit Glenwood. Please pack a high protein snack (muesli bar or two, dried fruit) and full water bottle. There is a tap along the M7 where water bottles can be refilled. Parents can pick your children up at 5pm from Fairmont Circuit.
Sunday 9th September – M7 cycleway, 80km ride
The Big One. Pathfinders will only be eligible for this ride if you have demonstrated through the bike camp and the 20km ride that you are capable of riding this far. This will be a hard ride and we need to be convinced of your ability before we allow you to ride. Anyone who did the advanced ride at our bike camp will be fine with this. We will team up with some additional experienced riders to assist with this event. Parents can drop their child and bike at Fairmont Circuit Glenwood at 6:45am (we are leaving at 7:00am) and pick them up again around 1pm. Please pack a high protein snack (muesli bar or two, dried fruit) and full water bottle. There is a tap along the M7 where water bottles can be refilled. We will do as 2 laps. Ride to tap (junction of M4) and back to start as this section of the M7 has less hills, and back again. Please pack lunch in a bag and this will be driven to the lunch point (where there is a toilet as well) to save the children needing to carrying a backpack.
The bikes that the Pathfinders used on the bike camp are all OK for these three rides. The pathfinders do not need a different road bike to complete the 80km ride, however access to a road style bike will make it easier for the M7 rides. It is not necessary for you to purchase any new bikes. Do not bring a road bike to the Wylde Mountain Bike Trail.
Don’t forget your bike needs to be in good working order (gears and brakes all OK) and bring a spare tube or puncture kit. Don’t forget your helmet and a jacket.
Note that all riding will be on shared pathways. We will be safe from cars, but still need to consider others when riding. Take note of slower cyclists/pedestrians ahead and also faster riders approaching from behind. We must keep to the left at all times and NOT cross the lane dividing line unless overtaking.
In order for us to plan an appropriate level of supervision for each event, please complete the following registration form by Wednesday 8th August to indicate which rides you are planning to attend.
